Many Different kinds of marine electronics are used on the high seas. There are many applications on a myriad of different types vessels including on military, commercial fishing, tour, and personal boats. A prime example of the importance of boat electronics can be found in the current conflict brewing in the ocean off of southern China and in many other areas around Asia’s coast. A handful of countries have claimed the same small group of islands, called the spratly islands, as their own territory. Marine radar depth finders and various other boat electronics are being used by each country in their quest to take the cluster of land for themselves .The electronic sensors in top systems like Garmin, Simrad, and many other devices are being used to maintain the safe passage of vessels traversing the waters in this busy part of the ocean that has many treacherous reefs!
In other news, Japan is providing Vietnam with patrol ships to help their maritime enforcement abilities. The water surrounding Vietnam are a high tension zone and new countries are constantly entering into the global issue of transport transit and delivery of goods. The quest for control over this small area in the pacific ocean is affecting smaller country islands such as the Philippines. The country has used these waters for fishing grounds and have so for generations, but now the security of their economy is being threatened.
To add to the tensions, North Korea is testing nuclear missiles in the sea of Japan and on land, which has become another political wild card in Asia. North Korea has received some of the worst flooding since 1945. The Flooding has damaged ten’s of thousands of homes and has pushed North Korea into making a very rare request for support and aid stating that they are in dire need of support. While their nuclear testing has faced harsh backlash, Five trillion dollars in trade passes through their waterways every year. This means that big money is at stake. The United States feels that they are stuck in between a rock and a hard place as they strongly condemn North Korea’s actions but have many allies and military bases in such close proximity to all of the commotion and unrest. Australia and the United states have been equally harassed by Chinese patrols claiming that they were violating international law by entering into the countries surrounding waters. China has tried to enact a permitting system for vessels to enter certain water. However The U.S maintains that this is against the International Freedom of Navigation Act. The U.S has sent multiple Navy Destroyer ships into the areas of unrest in order to try and send a message and restore order. It is easy to see hoe boat electronics such as sonar and imaging systems would be imperative in dangerous situations such as these.
